Floor Scales

Floor Scales are among the most competitive scale products. There are great differences in costs between a cheap floor scale and a premium floor scale. Floor scales are really pretty simple; load cells, junction cards, welded steel structures, wire and an indicator. For many folks, the least expensive one is the one being sought. Sadly these folks often do not get the performance that they had hoped for and discover that quite soon. Briefly, to tell the difference between a good floor scale and one that will be a disappointment, look at the weight of the scale. Generally, the more weight, the stiffer it will be and that means that weight on the scale will read the same regardless of where the weight is put on the scale. Inexpensive floor scales are called "distributed load" scales. They are designed for a load that covers evenly across a large portion of the scale surface. Premium scales are called "point load" scales. You can put the entire capacity of the scale on any small area of the surface and it will read correctly. The next consideration is load cells. Most load cells will do a decent job unless you ask for something special. Like more resolution than is typically required, more moisture than it was designed for, more impact from moving the scale or rough load handling than the cell can handle; all these things can cause an inexpensive cell to fail where a premium cell will continue to perform. Another important consideration is the junction box. Most inexpensive scales these days Velcro a summing card to the inside of a cavity inside the scale frame. This leaves the card vulnerable to water damage. Load cell cable can also be inadequate. Lack of shielding inside, poor materials and wire that is too thin can cause a floor scale to be disappointing. Then there is the indicator; some floor scales come with a calibrated indicator. Many of these indicators perform nicely unless you want something that does more. Do you want an indicator that will not get wet inside when you put it outside? How about one that can talk to your PC or turn a light or valve on? Maybe you need it to print. Maybe you need it to print something special like items from a database. Some floor scales can handle tremendous abuse, they use "flexures" and have one load cell. Some scales are designed with weigh bars and chains that can prevent damage from forklifts and machinery impacts. If you know that your needs are simple, we have some affordable scales that will perform well at a very low cost. We will advise you to not move the scale, not allow water near it and be careful how you load the scale.
